Drummer Hodge

MOTION DESIGN / VIDEO EDITING / STORYBOARDS
MY ROLE: creating animatics, storyboards, character design, puppetry

How do you retell a classic story
for a young audience?

We were tasked with finding a way to bring Thomas Hardy’s work to life through motion design. The challenge was it had to appeal to long-time fans of his work but still appeal to a younger demographic.

The Challenge

An early storyboard, exploring The Trumpet Major & the themes of love and war

We went with the style of shadow puppetry, as it felt it would highlight the gravity of the story, keeping it grounded and make it distinct.

The Approach

Early storyboard (left), final (right)

The Solution

A shadow puppetry animation inspired by Hardy’s poem The Drummer Hodge that explores the loss of war. We thought this would be a thought provoking story to retell, inviting the audience to reflect on its morals.
